I hoped I explained why sometimes (only in some cases) null is not enough. In the end, what I present is a more lightweight alternative to Option/Maybe. (Or a version of it, depending on how you look at it).

I cannot agree it's over-engineered. Could you elaborate on that? Do you know the Option/Maybe pattern?
